LEE MILLER | THE TRUE STORY
Short documentary
We all (myself included!) sometimes raise an eyebrow when “Based On A True Story” appears on screen. I really enjoy heading straight to Google after the credits role, to unearth all the facts myself. So it was a joy to direct this official companion documentary to Kate Winslet’s war biopic, LEE.
It explores the extraordinary life of war photographer Lee Miller, and along the way we find out how her story was brought to screen. Featuring Lee Miller’s son and granddaughter, as well as Kate Winslet (actor / producer), this featurette is available to watch on Sky Cinema alongside the film.
One of my favourite details from the piece is how we made Lee’s photos feel closer to the viewer; I didn’t want to simply bring them on screen, so our motion designer Anthony Le created a virtual contact sheet, based off the original Rolleiflex camera. We had to include a lot of copyright lines that would have distracted from the photos’ powerful stories, so we made the lines part of the “texture” of the contact sheet as each photo’s edge markings. It was a small thing, that made the whole documentary do greater justice to Lee’s work.
