MOTHER OF THE FOREST | CURUPIRA
Short documentary
A docu-animation directed by Lea Heijn and executive produced by Nicolas Brown (Human Planet), which tells the story of an Amazonian tribe, and their deep will to protect their all-powerful Goddess of Nature against the encroaching forces of agribusiness.
I pride myself on my sound design, and building the rich aural landscape of the Amazonian rainforest was a real joy - particularly in the animated sections.
I wanted to bring the Curupira herself into the edit, given that we never actually see her on screen (being a mythical spirit of the forest). I used an eerie whistle as her signature sound, and she frequently broke through the edit itself, stuttering it or shifting the world entirely as she struggled to warn the viewer of the threat deforestation poses.
